The Killers: Bringing Style to Street Scene
The Killers sound like a band straight out of the 80s and their group members are just as diverse as the music they make, especially lead vocalist and keyboard player Brandon Flowers whose past jobs have included a bellhop at the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Now, more than three years after the 26-year-old’s band released its first album, the Killers continue their success streak.
Formed in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2002, after Flowers’ first band dispersed, The Killers morphed into something more than any of the band members could have imagined. Its first album, “Hot Fuss,” (2004) featured hits songs such as “Somebody Told Me” and “Mr. Brightside” and the second full-length release, “Sam’s Town,” (2006) collectively have sold more than eight million copies to date. In regards to the band’s apparent instant success in both the U.S. and UK, the band is pleased with the reviews of their latest album.
“The people have kind of spoke an ‘Sam’s Town” is doing really well in America as it is we are lucky for it to be doing well everywhere and it just shows that the songs speak for themselves,” Flowers said in a January interview with J-TV in Hyde Park. “We may say some things that put a target on us or the music but eventually the songs kind of burst out of those things.”
The group has been nominated for seven Grammy Awards for its songs ?Somebody Told Me,? ?Mr. Brightside? and ?When You Were Young,? and has also won Best New Artist at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards. With its large following in the UK, The Killers also snatched up the award for Best International Album for “Sam’s Town” and Best International Group at the 2007 BRIT Awards and embarked on a September mini-tour this year.
Flowers, who had publicly criticized some of today’s most popular groups including Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco, said in the January interview with J-TV that the band has received some negative reviews from the media for being so outspoken but that the group’s charisma and self-assurance is what makes them stand out.
“You get told your whole life that you can do anything and then here we come from the desert and telling the world OK we believe it, and people don’t like it; they want modesty,” Flowers said. “I think there is a difference between modesty and humility because I feel very humble and very lucky to be where we are but I also think I am the best at it, so you have to figure we are somewhere in the middle there.”
